Welcome To Our Woods!

We promote sustainability and community resilience. Core to our ambitions is the Rhondda Skyine Project, concerning our community land, people and imagination- envisioning a future where land is managed sustainably to meet the needs of the people who live here, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. By connecting communities to the landscape, we aim to provide jobs, spaces for social and cultural activity, and an improved home for nature.

If you're passionate about fostering a brighter future for our community, we invite you to get involved! Whether you want to volunteer, support our initiatives, or join community-led development forums, there's a place for you here.

Our vision and values

Our community co-designed mission to revitalise the valley focuses on sustainability, social enterprise, and education through our core pillars:

  • Social Forestry Hub, emphasising restorative community woodland management;
  • Community Food Resilience Programmes;
  • Sustainable Future Skills Centres; and
  • Access to Nature & Community Wellbeing Programmes.

These pillars provide a framework for local people to shape our environment and engage with the land sustainably. To learn more about our Future Forest Vision and the details behind these pillars, visit Future Forest Vision Future Forest Vision.

Partnerships for a brighter future - Black Mountain College Rhondda

We are excited to partner with Black Mountains College (BMC) Rhondda to deliver further education courses in Treherbert. BMC has played a crucial role in equipping local people with practical skills in sustainable land management, food production, and woodland restoration. Our collaboration aims to establish Treherbert as a "Forest Town" centre of excellence for lifelong learning. In addition to an NVQ Level 1 course in Land-Based Studies (open to those aged 16 and over), BMC offers NVQ Level 2 courses in Nature Restoration, Regenerative Horticulture, and Forestry & Arboriculture. Other short courses are also available in Treherbert.

Down To Earth: Wood for Good programme

Through our partnership with Down to Earth, we host the Wood to Good Programme at Treherbert, which provides clinically proven mental health improvement initiatives alongside opportunities to gaining qualifications. Through engagement with the landscape, participants gain a better understanding of the woodland, its ecology and habitats, through to getting hands-on with the timber products that can come out of it. In a community with no established woodland skills base, this programme focuses on creating sustainable, local career opportunities that strengthen the foundational economy.
